Today: viszontlátásra vs. viszlát

Hungarian has a formal and informal way of speaking and these two words are a good example:


viszontlátásra - goodbye
viszlát - bye

While viszlát is much easier to pronounce you won't hear it much when out and about shopping or going to museums or restaurants. Viszontlátásra is the formal goodbye.


Kívánok adds formality also. You will hear it added to jó napot  - good day, good afternoon, hello, etc. Jó napot kívánok now becomes "I wish you a good day." Chances are when you are saying goodbye after a kívánok statement viszontlátásra is the proper way.
